What is LASIK?
LASIK is a type of refractive procedure that corrects errors of refraction – nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or the need for reading glasses, which is called presbyopia. It helps you achieve clear vision without having to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. And one of the most important steps before getting it done is undergoing LASIK screening.
Things to take note of before booking:
- Stop contact lenses wear as it can temporarily change the shape of your cornea. Recommended to switch to eyeglasses 7 days before your screening if you are wearing soft contact lenses, or 1 month if you have hard or rigid contact lenses.
- Not to drive after the screening due to the dilating eye drops used for your examination.
What to expect during a LASIK screening
The LASIK eye screening includes the following:
- History Taking & Visual Acuity Test: Measures sharpness of vision.
- Manifest Refraction: Determines type & degree of refractive error.
- Tonometry: Determines the eye pressure.
- Corneal Thickness and Shape: To assess LASIK suitability.
- Slit Lamp Exam: Examines the front part of the eye for signs of dry eyes, cataracts, and contact lens-related issues.
- Dilation: Allows more light to enter the eye for a wider field of view.
- Fundus Examination: Assesses the macula, retina, and optic nerve head.
- Assessment & Management: Includes an ophthalmologist consultation.

If suitable, what to expect during and after LASIK surgery?
The procedure is generally painless as it is done using numbing eyedrops, which is usually effective within the short duration of the procedure (under 10-15 minutes for both eyes)
LASIK is typically a short 30-minutes surgery.
- Fast recovery with many being able to work the next day.
The results of laser vision correction are generally permanent.
That said, our eyes continue to age in life, together with the rest of our bodies.
Slight regression of myopia may occur due to aging, particularly if the initial degree was very high to begin with.
